Turning Crisis Into Opportunity

Just when I felt as though I was catching up with everything and getting my life organized, the unexpected (of course) occurred: in the middle of working, my screen went black and displayed the error "2110 HDD0 (Hard Disk Drive) Error Reading". The drive was suddenly and irrevocably lost.

Lenovo didn't give me any trouble about replacing it, and within a week I had a new drive and recovery disks in hand. In the meantime, I did my work on Ari's computer without any trouble; since all of my work is on servers, I could pick up right where I left off.

And now I've got the opportunity to get started again on a squeaky-clean machine. I'm just about done setting up the system, and I thought I'd document my essential software and tweaks for my own reference.

Commercial Software

  • Adobe CS3: Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, InDesign
  • Microsoft Office 2007: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio
  • Norton Antivirus

Shareware/Freeware Software

Other tweaks I like to make:

  • Set up several often-used websites (WNYC player, SlimTimer timer) as Chrome app shortcuts
  • Move the Quick Launch bar to the right side of the screen
  • Set up automated local & remote backups with SyncBack

Now I feel like I've just cleaned house; I don't at all mind starting out the fall with a nice tidy machine!
